Phil and Nigel,
Thanks for raising this. At minimum, I think your questions should be answered and the Board's prior knowledge of this needs to be clarified.
Best,
Brett

On December 18 Fadi posted this on Twitter--
"ICANN President @icann_president Dec 18
Glad to co-chair with Jack Ma #WuzhenSummit multistakeholder advisory committee in personal capacity. A post-ICANN activity to champion MSM."
This seems to raise some questions:
· Can the ICANN CEO participate in an Internet Governance related activity in a truly personal capacity? Somehow I have to think he might not be touted as Co-Chair if he was simply a private citizen with no ICANN connection.
· How can this be a “post-ICANN activity” when he is engaged now and still on the payroll until March 12th? Who paid for his travel expenses to Wuhzen?
· Is this new initiative really going to “champion MSM” when it appears that the Chinese will continue to pursue a multilateral IG, pro-Internet censorship agenda that makes excuses for national firewalls and pervasive monitoring?
My view is that Fadi’s prominent role as Co-Chair, initiated while still ICANN CEO, implicitly gives this initiative ICANN’s blessing even though its aims may be very divergent from those of the transition, which is to preserve the MSM and an open Internet.
I share Nigel’s curiosity as to whether this was signed off on in advance by the Board.

Actually, I mean the guanxi of setting up Netmundial Redux in China which I think is very dangerous to the whole multistakeholder concept we have all been working for these last almost 20 years. This is serious stuff.
I am going to assume that ICANN can afford the best cultural briefings available, therefore I assume that this is all done (a) intentionally and (b) with the active acquiescence of the Board.
I like the guy personally. All questions of waffling aside, he's very personable.
But if he worked for me, he would suddenly find his planned exit moved forward VERY considerably after this . .
