Xavier, thanks so much for your very prompt response to the question.
I perhaps might take this opportunity to appreciate, in my individual capacity, that the ICANN community was able to say thank you and recognize our outgoing CEO here in Marrakech, at ICANN55, at the ICANN meeting which is being held in Fadi's 'home' region.
Thanks again for your very prompt response.

Dear Eberhard,

Thank you for your question.

The Afralo showcase and tribute to Fadi was held on Monday night. The 2 purposes were combined so that they don’t conflict on the schedule and to save logistics and costs.

The entire event cost approximately $106,000 to ICANN which was planned for 1200 people. The Afralo showcase (musicians, dancers,…) was paid for by Afralo.

In case of interest, ICANN has previously held a community farewell cocktail for exiting CEOs at their last meeting. The cost of this is typically between $50,000 and $60,000.

The additional $40,000 we had to pay this time was for the fitted out marquee including AV. This was required on this particular occasion as no other room large enough to accommodate the entire community was available.

I hope this is helpful and addresses your question.

Best,

Xavier

Pierre Dandjinou Welcomes You To ICANN55 In Africa!

By Pierre Dandjinou, VP of Stakeholder Engagement for Africa

After a successful meeting in Dublin in October 2015, we began the
countdown to ICANN55 in Marrakech. Three years have passed since ICANN held its last public meeting in Africa - in Durban, South Africa - and since then, the African community has been looking forward to ICANN55. I am
thrilled that, once again, the African community will welcome the global Internet community to Africa.

All Domains Should Be Treated Equally!

Currently, many systems don't recognize or can't process new domain names, primarily because they may be more than three characters in length or in a non-ASCII format. Achieving Universal Acceptance will enable the next billion users to come online. Join

At-Large Outreach Program: Sixty University Students From Rabat Visit ICANN55 In Marrakech

Soufia Bellamkirab, Yaovi Atohoun, Gisella Gruber, Noura Znaidi, Heidi Ullrich and Alan Greenberg

Sixty university students from Rabat are participating in the ICANN55 Meeting as part of At-Large outreach and engagement activities. This will be their first time at an ICANN Meeting. Many are students of Aziz Hilali, who is the community organizer
of ICANN55. The students are from the Institut
National des Postes et Télécommunications and the Institut
Superieur de l'Information et de la Communication.

For more information about this program,

Read a Q&A with two of the students below.

Soufia Bellamkirab, IT Engineering Student at the Institut National des Postes et Télécommunications

How did you learn about ICANN?

Last year, our school hosted an event with Aziz Hilali. We also hosted Fadi Chehadé and Mr. Baher Esmat to talk about the multistakeholder model.

What interested you about ICANN?

ICANN is us, ICANN is the globe. For me, as an IT student, it is very interesting for me to know more about ICANN, how it works, what people are here. I just signed-up for ICANN Learn, it is an amazing platform. I'm looking forward to the Internet Governance
course, in the second semester with Mr. Hilali.

What's it like being one of the few female students in IT at your university?

It's cool to be one of the few female IT engineers, it's just amazing. I love what we study and what we do.

Noura Znaidi, Graduate Student, Institut Supérieur De L'Information Et De La Communication

How did you learn about ICANN?

I heard about the program through Aziz Hilali. He is one of our professors.

What interested you about ICANN?

We are living in a connected world, so we have to know more informed about this domain. As a journalism student, you should know about the world you are living in, I feel this is an obligation now, this is a necessity, you should know, how it works and how
it will be in the future.

Fabricio Pessôa - Brazil
Member of ICANN Fellowship Program

What is your current job?

I am Community Engagement and Relationship Manager at
AXUR - Cyber Inspection for a Safer Web.

How did you become involved with ICANN?

I heard about the fellowship program from Daniel Fink, Manager of Stakeholder Engagement in Brazil. I thought it would be a great way to learn about ICANN. My first meeting was ICANN54 in Buenos Aires, where I got a broad idea of how things work. I am now headed
to ICANN55 in Marrakech, where I plan to deepen my knowledge and decide where to become involved.

What is your call to action?

I hope that more representatives of the LAC region will become decision-makers, especially in the areas of security and the fight against cybercrime. I'd also like to bring in non-technical people and teach them more about the Web so they can participate in
debates on issues like big data and personal information. I feel that end users should be the ones making decisions in these areas, not technical communities, government or law enforcement.

One of my goals at ICANN is to find more people who share my ideas.

Where Do I Get My Invitation and How Do I Get To The Gala Dinner?

On the occasion of the 55th ICANN meeting, M. Azdine EL MOUNTASSIR BILLAH, Director General of the National Telecommunication
Regulatory Agency (ANRT), is pleased to invite you to the gala dinner that will be held in honor of participants of the ICANN meeting. The dinner will take place at the Menara Gardens
 - Ain Mezouar, Marrakech on Wednesday 9 March 2016 at 20:00pm.

Invitations are available at the ICANN Information Booth.

Buses leave from Palmeraie Conference Center at 19:00.
