Let's do a discussion call w BC NC reps, past and present to carry forward.
Bene, please do a doodle for this for Feb 2-25.

ITU WTPF has a few of us consumed for some days, but this has some flexibility in "days".

Our priority is all former BC-ers re NC.

The NomComs in which I participated used a headhunter, the same one for two years. It was useful enough for initial filtering purposes but the first year in particular was challenging, as the ICANN community was completely new to the company. And its so unique, as we know!

It takes a lot of coaching and guidance from the NomCom but the idea should not be dismissed, in my opinion, particularly if the headhunter has a chance to grow in experience over time.

Kind regards

When we have tried this (as the NC I was on did), we found that it was confusing to Senior executives that they were going through this layered and generalistic approach.

The head hunter turned up people who didn't know ICANN and wanted to be on paid boards,

Years have passed, and  there is improvement in approach as well as more understanding about ICANN. Others on more recent NCs will have better insights, like Sarah and Waudo, Phil Lodico......

It is worth a discussion, I think. The geographical diversity issue and gender issues should also be addressed in our thoughts about good candidates.

Keeping in mind that the NC also has important appointments in Councils and ALAC, as well.

Thanks for bringing your insight to this matter, John.  It's good to hear the historical context around the Nom Comm considering appointing the NCAs to houses rather than having council wrestle with it.  Waudo and I are grateful for this input and solicit other member's suggestions/recommendations as well.

Ron,

Thanks for this.  Very helpful, item number 2 in particular as the Council got itself tied into a knot on this point last year.

I was intrigued by the notion of using a headhunter, too.  It will, of course, cost money, but if ICANN is to bust out of its narrower history of choice, invitation and selection, it might just do the trick.

I wonder, though, if an interim step might be considered.

There are a (growing) number of companies and organizations that participate in ICANN right now.  These entities have two perquisites.  One, they are familiar with ICANN.  Two, they have their own boards comprised of outside directors.

I wonder if there is a way to partner with this group to recruit senior level executives from that pool of talent?

It would be cool to tap into the executive reach of companies like AT&T or organizations like the United Way.

Too crazy?

Cheers,

Dear all,

On behalf of Waudo Segunga and I, please find the Nom Comm report card on what was accomplished at our meeting this past Monday (Jan. 21st).  The Committee is working through the various channels of activity to meet our mandate, as well as raising awareness of the opportunities to serve ICANN in key leadership roles <http://nomcom.icann.org/> .  Waudo and I would welcome BC members giving thought to whom they know that would be a good candidate.  You can do this direct to either of us, or using the simple online recommendation process <http://nomcom.icann.org/suggest>.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to consider good people that you would enjoy working with and bringing them forward to our attention.

Kind regards,
