Several lawmakers, including Sens. Kelly Ayotte and Deb Fischer, raised concerns at Tuesday’s Senate Commerce hearing that the transition could risk U.S. authority over the government domains. “The operation of and responsibility for .mil and .gov are not impacted by this transition” and “cannot be sold or transferred without explicit agreement first from the current administrators of those domains — namely, the U.S. government,” an NTIA spokeswoman said in a statement. In light of congressional concerns, NTIA said it’s asked ICANN to reaffirm the U.S. government controls .mil and .gov.
