Advisory groups are so much easier to control than multistakeholder groups, especially those that have the power under ICANN by-laws to make policy recommendations that can't be ignored or repackaged.

This is all part of the "corporatization" of ICANN.  But there is no traditional corporate model I can think of that accommodates diverse groups of stakeholders as an essential part of the process of doing business.  If we don't push back, we will be pushed aside, down and ultimately out into the cornfield.

Finally, executives often hire consultants and form advisory panels as "cover" for the things they want to do anyway.  Then they can say they are following the advice of the consultant/panel/mirror, mirror on the wall (actually, the mirror had more of an independent streak...).
