There are two issues in this thread, so I want to be specific to remove any confusion. The first issue is my presentation to the GNSO Council as Chair of the SCI. I am prepared to make that presentation on either Saturday or Sunday, as you wish. The second issue (and first note in this thread) is the day/time for a face-to-face SCI member meeting in Beijing. On that front, I had asked Glen for a room and time as late on Sunday afternoon as possible to try to accommodate committee members who are flying in Sunday for the Monday morning start of the ICANN meeting. I understand your email of today to be regarding the SCI Chair presentation. Is this correct? Please advise. Kind regards, RA Ronald N. This is for three reasons: 1. Lack of clarity in relation to my last comment that I had understood that only two of the three elements may required. (You may recall I stated I did not think IPC would go for the notion that the motion must always be supported by a voter who previously voted against it.) 2. Heavy time commitments for me and others in the IPC in relation to the March 7 deadline for Public Comment on closed generics. 3. Heavy business travel to California and London all last week. Please excuse the delay. I hope to get further clarification tomorrow and to be able to submit this topic to IPC Leadership by the end of this week. Thank you, Anne Anne E. I am pleased to report that we have completed the first set of materials and are readying to post them on the updated "Basics" page of GNSO.icann.org. Rather than fill your mailbox with all six modules at once, I have posted them to the GNSO Council Resources wiki page at - https://community.icann.org/display/gnsocounres/General . The redesigned GNSO Basics page - http://newgnso.icann.org/en/basics/getting-started ? should be up on the GNSO web site within a few days. We hope it will be a helpful resource. Please feel free to access the new materials from the wiki attachment links and offer any comments in the space. Staff is particularly interested in hearing about any new/additional topics that you think should get the "basic" treatment. Mikey is right when he says ?don?t worry, we all went through this ?. All of the old-timers as well as newcomers have experienced feeling this huge chasm of lack of information and fear of speaking up for perhaps sounding foolish And you are correct to a certain extent that there is some merit in ?growing? in ICANN through putting in the years, but with the maturing organization we have today, with all the newcomers, we simply don?t have enough mentors to do the job effectively. So now is a good time to address this issue and I believe that the ?tool kit? that we ? and staff ? have been talking about for what feels like a long time is within our grasp. An organization can only function effectively when all members are versed in the distinct language of the organization, in my view. The other issue that you touched on made me aware that it seems to be a recurring one amongst all of the volunteers of ICANN and that is our mutual attraction to the great experiment of the multi-stakeholder model. For my part, that is one of the most exciting parts of ICANN and what has kept me in this community for some 13 years or so. It is obviously the same for you, someone more new to the community. So maybe you have identified ?the glue? that brings this disparate community together If everyone kept that element at the forefront of their thoughts when engaging in ICANN work, we would probably have a lot less friction in the organization and find our way to more effective bottom-up decision-making. Thanks again for bringing these ideas to light. Very helpful. Kind regards, RA Ronald N. In my opinion and related to this, I think that what needs attention at ICANN (among many things) is a broader subject than refining the WG guidelines. I am thinking of a more systematic manner for ICANN to get the various categories of newcomers up the learning curve (I know many are working on this - witness inter alia the ICANN Academy discussions - they seem to have fallen of the radar!..and of course the Fellowship Program is quite effective I think). Understanding the stakeholders' landscape and their learning needs requires a thorough analysis of our various stakeholders profiles, their ICANN-related motivation, and basically an understanding of their training needs. If we meet those training needs (in many different ways I suppose), then we will optimize the value, the reality, the sustainability and the functionning of the multi-stakeholder model. Of course, I am of the school of ardent supporters of the MS model as a key distinguishing feature of ICANN and maybe even its key to long-term growth and sustainability. Indeed, I am of the opinion that participating in a WG is a great way to learn (and network to learn) but it is a time-consuming one and seen as risky for many new stakeholders (time commitment, fear of the unknown and of rejection, etc...). When faced with this, and after getting to know Mikey in San Jos? after having joined the IRTP-Part C WG with the view of learning, Mikey told me something like: "don't be discouraged, welcome to the club, we all went through this, it takes at least 2 years, etc...". Beacuse of Mikey's advice, and at time mentoring, I am sticking to the plan, but sure would welcome so learning opportunities a bit more structured! (Thanks Mikey for all the time you have given me!). That said, I wonder now really if this is the better way to go... pay your dues kind of argument... I think that leads to a kind of strong commitment if ones sticks to the strategy, but how many do? and at what cost? I am of the opinion there could be a more systematic way for newcomers to go through some learning modules in a certain systematic order, rather than ad hoc diving in the website or wikipedia, ICANN meetings, WGs...
