Hi Jacob

I accept that on face value, the applications for this round don’t appear to have a great deal of diversity, but there are other ways to look at diversity other than the type of application as categorised by the AGB. I assume ‘brands’ are included in the 88%; it doesn’t take into account regional diversity and while I admit that wasn’t terrific you’d have to say the applications from Asia Pacific and Europe were encouraging; we should also factor into the equation some of the innovative ways the TLDs are being used and the different business models being applied. So I think when we talk about diversity we should go deeper than the categories you’ve identified.

Personally, I don’t think the vanilla nature of this round was necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks,

Donna

Further to yesterday's discussion, here are some stats from: http://newgtlds.icann.org/en/program-status/statistics

In terms of discussing whether to include a note the about low diversity of types of applications, this chart shows that it would be significantly more unfair to remove the point than to include it. (Note I excluded 17 community applications that were brands e.g. .bugatti, with apologies to Bugatti owners.)

Whether the low diversity is appropriate or not is something we should discuss remaining neutral on, but the fact remains there were four options in the AGB: Community, Geographic, IDN and Standard and almost 90% were of one type.

In other words, this was unequivocally not a diverse application round in terms of types of applications.

For the record, I and my employer, Valideus, do represent several non-commercial, community applicants/registries, but your point is well taken.

We will try our best to do the document clean up, but of course will run everything by the group to make sure that we got it right (or not). We will also make sure that we turn around redlines so that you can see the changes.

But since some of the comment I rushed to get in in time for the meeting were not complete, I suppose I should be grateful.

I want to reiterate my discomfort with the increasing tend, seen again in this group, of chairs taking control of the content and taking the pen in a relative opaque manner. In this case we have 2 people who I like and trust as people (a purely subjective statement), but none of whom have non-commercial, community applicant not user points of view (possibly an objective statement).

I guess I will have to wait to see how it all works out. And hope.
