Dear Nick: The currency codes are derived directly from the ISO 3166 alpha2 codes. e.g. USD, GBP. CHF etc.

Be that as it may, if some think they would be out of scope in WT5, then I would be interested in knowing where they would be in-scope?

Hi Christopher

Re: 4. The discussion of ISO-4217 alpha3 currency codes is still very superficial. It is not correct just to say that this is 'out of scope'.

I’m afraid I just don’t see this at all; I think the currency codes are too derivative, even in the most generous interpretation of what might be a geographic term, to be in scope of WT5. They relate purely to a country’s currency and not the country.

By way of analogy, the words for a country’s time zone could not possibly be geographic names (Greenwich Mean Time, Pacific Standard Time for example) even though they might have place/ ocean names contained within them.

Could you elaborate your reasoning here? I think WT5 has plenty on its plate without spending valuable face to face time on cul-de-sac issues.

Best wishes

Nick

Dear Emily, Dear colleagues:

With a view to our meeting on Saturday morning in Barcelona:

1. The draft report continues to imply that there was merit in the 2007 position whereas much that has passed meanwhile, including the constitution of WT5 itself with our cross-community format, has been to correct and change those mistakes.
WT5 is not beholden to what was done in 2007 or even in 2012.

2. At several points there is reference to ICANN's obligation to respect applicable local laws 'in the Bylaws'.
I would point out that this condition is stated in the ICANN Articles of Incorporation, without qualification, and that the Bylaws are just implementing the Articles of Incorporation. The references should be to the Articles of Incorporation not to the Bylaws..

3. The discussion on Geographical Indications is still too superficial.

4. The discussion of ISO-4217 alpha3 currency codes is still very superficial. It is not correct just to say that this is 'out of scope'.

There may be other points that I may raise during the meeting on Saturday.

Best regards

Christopher Wilkinson

PS: The paragraphs are not numbered. For the pagination, most pages in my printout are labelled, counter-intuitively " Page 85 of 71"
I trust that is not the case for everyone else.

This draft incorporates feedback received from WT members on the sections previously shared, and also includes content for the remaining sections of the report. Please note that is a working draft produced by staff, and that not all of the WT co-leaders have had the chance to review the document fully. Therefore, the co-leaders may provide additional input along with the rest of the WT in the coming weeks. Note also that based on feedback from Work Track members, proposals previously included in section d. of the report are now integrated into the appropriate subsections of section f (deliberations) in order to ensure that all proposals are presented in a consistent manner and that there is sufficient context provided for each proposal.

Please do not send your own redline version of the text to the mailing list. Given the very large number of WT members, it will be very difficult to reconcile many different redline versions.
