Knowledge/Use (or lack) of whois has no correlation to "losing your 
domain name" unless you mean the opposite, the existence/use of whois is 
often instrumental in allowing for domain hijacks/thefts.

There is no management of domains you can do with whois - it's a 1-way 
pull readonly protocol.

I _guess_ you're referring somehow to checking "ownership" details ? 
WHOIS is in no way needed for that - the authoritative place to do it is 
with your Registrar.
