Notes 30/8 – RDS PDP WG Meeting

These high-level notes are designed to help PDP WG members navigate through the content of the call and are not meant as a substitute for the transcript and/or recording. The MP3, transcript, and chat are provided separately and are posted on the wiki at: https://community.icann.org/x/C4xlAw.

1) Roll call/SOI updates

· Attendance will be taken from AC room

· Audio only: Marina Lewis

· Please state your name before speaking for transcription purposes.

2) Final text of problem statement circulated and posted here: https://community.icann.org/x/rACbAw

· Is there something drastically problematic in the months ahead, the statement can be revisted

· Important to remember that the problem statement is meant as a tool to aid in discussion, consistent with but not a constraint on the WG and its Charter

3) Work plan status update (see https://community.icann.org/x/oIxlAw)

· Work plan has been updated to reflect latest changes agreed to in the last few months

· Later this week a redline version will be distributed to review the latest changes that can be discussed during next week's meeting

4) Continue review of example use cases:

· Leadership team would like to wrap up use cases no later than next week. Should any use cases be discovered after that, there is nothing preventing the WG from reviewing any additional ones. If there are any additional use cases, in addition to those already discussed, please do so by Friday 2 September at the latest.

Action item #1: WG members to identify if there are any additional use cases, in addition to those already discussed, by Friday 2 September at the latest.

18- Business Intelligence (Elaine Pruis)

· See use case at https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· Questions / comments: A related use case to both Beth's and Elaine's that would not be resolved by access tokens is the business intelligence use of RDS to evaluate potential acquisition targets. Is the RDS needed for this specific use case? Need to make distinction between active content and other uses which may be easier with RDS, but could also be tested in the DNS. Looking at content may not provide indication of location, while WHOIS could. However, P/P services would skew the results.

23- Business DNs - Mergers and Acquisitions (Beth Allegretti)

· See use case at https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· Questions / comments: Stakeholders might include registrants (staff members acting as private persons when registered domains in their  own name). As a hosting providers, this is a common scenario to assist companies to come to grips with their portfolio. It sometimes becomes complicated if the name is registered to a person not associated with the company (e.g. employee that has registered domain with personal details). Expert testimony also benefits in a similar way from access to WHOIS as it provides details concerning the ownership of a registration. Expert testimony may be a separate use case as presumably in a merger and acquisition, the parties are co-operating which may not be the case in the case of expert testimony. From a basic perspective, that RDS is used to veryfy ownership when manageming one's assets.

24- Business DNs - Bankruptcy Asset Purchase (Marina Lewis)

· See use case at https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· Questions/comments: Domains are treated by some as an asset, but not an issue that this WG is expected to opine on. Focus on the purpose of a domain name registration instead. This may also impact what information is/needs to be published / accessible. May consider adding to implications: might be limited to local legal practice?

22- Find Domains Registered by Miscreant (Rod Rasmussen)

· See use case at https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· Questions/comments: not always same details, but sometimes similar pattern is used.

20- Tech Issue Resolution Examples (Rob Golding, if able to attend)

· See use case at https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· Questions/comments: some of these occur on a regular basis - kinds of things that registrars see often.

All posted here: https://community.icann.org/x/JA6bAw

· All use cases submitted have now been discussed. If there any other that are deemed useful, these need to be submitted following the template by Friday 2 September at the latest.

· Expect to wrap up discussion on use cases next week.

5) Update on ICANN57 plans and travel/visa needs

· Two F2F meeting slots available on day 1 of ICANN57 (Thursday 3 November)

· Doodle poll has been circulated to assess whether there is any significant difference between morning or afternoon slot.

Action item #2: WG members to complete doodle poll by Wednesday 31 August at the latest (see http://doodle.com/poll/ngd7k9dybkwctchx)

6) Confirm Next Meeting - Tuesday 6 September 16.00 UTC
