Besides the standard complaint replies, I've actually received today a 
reply on my rationale regarding this matter: It seems ICANNs position is 
that the registrars operation procedure is legit and backed by the 
registry agreements:

Registry operators may establish additional policies or procedures for a 
generic top-level domain (gTLD) and  request that users provide 
additional credentialing information to grant access to its zone files 
without limitation (see Specification 4, Section 2.1.2 of the Registry 
Agreement (RA).

This means (as I understand this) it's essentially up to the registrar 
if access is granted or not.
