Sandra,

I’m interested ! Count me in!

Keen to bring not only a perspective from the SSAC, but also from
someone who has brought many new comers to ICANN and other Internet
Governance related fora.

In regards to the questions asked, below are my quick thoughts:

>> 1. We want to know what is challenging to chairs, new and old.

- Understanding group dynamics, cross cultural issues and gender issues,
and utilizing techniques so that all in the group can engage and
participate actively.

- Saboteurs and/or Passionate views that make it challenging for a group
to come to a common understanding and consensus.

- Keeping the group focused & on time: Keeping groups on track, both in
regards to agreed to scope & focus as well as agreed to timeline

- Keeping the chair as a neutral facilitator and not getting caught up
in the dynamics of contested issues that might arise.

- Participants not declaring their conflicts & interests.

>> 2. What skills would be helpful to chairs so they can be highly
>> effective with their groups?

techniques and processes that can be used to diffuse, at times
passionate views, so that groups can develop their work product.

>> 3. What got in the way of being effective facilitators?

- Not being sufficiently neutral
- Not being able to handle passionate and strong personalities

>> 4. What worked for them?

- Learning from experts (such as those present at the ICANN academy)
- Participating in role playing exercises , that is followed-up with
recommendations
- Better understanding of how different social/cultural aspects can be
used to strengthen group dynamics.

Regards

Robert
