Dear Udaya,
Rajib came today and we went through the first 18 pages of the
material. I have made the following suggestions:
1. The areas where Bangla is spoken as the language of the soil should
include parts of Jharkhand, where Bangla is the language of the
majority (42% or so). Parts of Bihar should also be mentioned. You
have included Bengali diaspora where 'some other countries of Europe'
may also be included.
2.The part dealing with the periodization of Bangla language needs
some chronological reordering. In the middle period, texts have to be
named, instead of characters of those texts. In the modern period,
chronology seems a bit jumbled. Hutom has been mentioned before
Rammohan Ray, Vidyasagar etc.
3. Dhaka-Mymensingh dialect are being, in a limited way I think, as
the main code in novels, but such others dialects are also finding the
same role. The Purulia dialct, for example. Dialects however are
always used in 'dialogues of plays and fiction. There use in the
descriptive text is rather recent.
4. Could you also give the Bangla Akademi experiment some wider scope
in the discussion ? It is being widely used in school texts in both
Bangladesh, West Bengal and Tripura, and many books and journals are
also being published in the font.
5. You have discussed vowel allographs, but those of the consonants
have been overlooked. Please include them at the end of the
discussion on vowel symbols.
6. Other minor corrections, additions etc. have also been suggested.
Rajib will communicate to you in full.
Affectionately,
Pabitrada.
