[registration-issues-wg] Fwd: Stop the Price Increase of .com

I agree with your comments on the article, Michele.

Domains are IMO way underpriced. They could triple overnight and not effect
legitimate uses of domains to protect a brand or communicate with the
public. In the whole cost of maintaining an Internet presence, the domain
costs are fractions of a percent.

If anything, the wholesale cost of domains should be significantly higher
than it is, with the extra proceeds funding enhanced enforcement and public
education programs.

The losers from a significantly higher domain price are
(1) the speculative domain industry whose rent seeking activity subtracts
value and
(2) ICANN itself, whose revenue per domain would rise but for a smaller
number of domains as speculative portfolios shrink

The winners would be
(3)everyone else on earth; those who want to use domains as a destination,
and the people who would use those domains to find them.

To me ALAC should not impede such price increases, indeed if there is any
position to be taken we should be in support.
