[registration-issues-wg] [CPWG] Fwd: ISOC sells PIR

But the problem is once Ethos takes its slice and PIR takes its share for admin, etc, how much will be left for ISOC?

ISOC will no longer be in the picture. PIR was effectively owned by ISOC and will be sold to Ethos. Presumably the selling price will create the "endowment" that Andrew mentions in the announcement.

With a new owner, it is anyone's guess whether the prior commitment of reasonableness will be upheld.

I'm afraid I don't see the connection to Auction funds.

Re Fadi: Yes, https://domainnamewire.com/tag/ethos-capital/ makes interesting reading.

Just read the articles, and I suspect that ISOC has decided to give the business responsibility of .ORG away to Ethos Capital so that they can concentrate on their chapters and their core business. Also it must have seemed to be growing conflict of interest trying to be fair to all etc when it came to funding projects etc. An outside organisation / foundation could be more objective

At our last PIR Advisory Council meeting, PIR assured us that prices would be kept to a "reasonable" level despite the removal of the cap and that the company would maintain .ORG in support of organisations working for social good. The link to Fadi Chehade is interesting as well as the registration of the Ethos company on the day the PIR agreement was finalised.

It does however for those of us still embroiled in the ICANN auction proceeds dilemma, this could add another mechanism to the mix, with Ethos Capital as an external organisation that could work with ICANN and a non-ICANN Org Management Body to manage its projects and the distribution of its funding.

I know for sure that this was not even hinted at during the last PIR Advisory Council meeting.. but it will have major implications for the ISOC chapters. What are they/ISOC thinking?

Had we known this was lurking in the background -- which it most certainly was at the time -- it might have been a different discussion. How much did ISOC know and when did they know it -- a question ISOC chapters might want to ask.

I must say, this casts the decision to drop price caps for .org in a slightly different light. I will keep you posted as I learn more.
