 and Global Business Engagement, started the ceremony. His main theme, echoed by many speakers, was Puerto Rico's strength and resilience in its recovery and rebuilding efforts. </span></div>

Guest speakers were Ricardo Rosell�, Governor of Puerto Rico; David Redl, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Communications and Information, and Administrator of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA); and Oscar Moreno de Ayala, CEO

 of NIC.PR.<br>

Cherine Chalaby, Chair, ICANN Board, spoke to the changes in the ICANN Board and org since the transition from the U.S. Government. Referencing increased accountability to the community, he talked about ICANN's strategic plan, financial direction, governance

 model, and ability to respond to future trends. <br>

<br>

G�ran Marby, ICANN President and CEO, also stressed the importance of accountability. In addition, Marby touched on the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and what it means for ICANN.<br>

<br>

Governor Ricardo Rosell�, explained how responses to recent natural disasters have led to innovation and collaboration, and how Puerto Rico can look to ICANN's multistakeholder model as a guide in policymaking, economic development, and education.<br>

<br>

David Redl, new head of NTIA, reiterated the U.S. Government's support for the multistakeholder approach to Internet governance and policymaking, and its major issues surrounding WHOIS and the GDPR.<br>

<br>

Paul Wilson, Chair, Number Resource Organization (NRO) Executive Council, commented on the resilience of the Internet and how Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) respond to emergencies such as Hurricanes Irma and Maria. He also gave an update on the adoption

 of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6).<br>

ICANN61's local host, Oscar Moreno de Ayala from NIC.PR, thanked the global Internet community for its role in recovery efforts in Puerto Rico. He then highlighted Internet advances in Puerto Rico since 2007, when San Juan was the host of ICANN29. He cited

 the adoption of .pr and the rapid growth of the Internet in business, not-for-profits, government, and private organizations. He finished by describing how NIC.PR has collaborated with NASA to implement Internet technologies in the education sector.

<div><span style="font-size:10pt;">Annaliese Williams is the ICANN GAC representative for Australia. In addition to GAC responsibilities, she works on domestic Internet governance and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) issues. </span></div>

Australia is a strong supporter of a multistakeholder approach to Internet governance that is inclusive, consensus-based, transparent, and accountable - and thinks all stakeholders have a valuable contribution to make. One of the exciting things she'll be working

 on this year is a new community-led forum for different Australian Internet stakeholders to discuss issues and learn from each other.<br>

<br>

Australia launched its first International Cyber Engagement Strategy last year, with an entire chapter on Internet governance and cooperation. Part of the strategy includes regional capacity building. Williams is looking forward to working with her GAC colleagues

 and non-government partners to build capacity and raise awareness in her region on Internet governance issues.</div>

<div>Shamar Ward is from Barbados, a Small Island Developing State (SIDS) located in the Eastern Caribbean. His first experience with ICANN was at a remote hub set up for ICANN55 at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus, where he is a Ph.D. candidate.

 He had first heard about ICANN from Jason Hynds, an ICANN Fellow from Barbados, who shared his experiences and views on the importance of Internet governance.<br>

At ICANN61, Ward hopes to foster relationships with others who are as passionate as he is about the Internet and its governance. He also wants to learn more about the future of the Internet and to share his views on how these future plans might affect SIDS.<br>
