Dear Jonathan,

my understanding of the technology leads me to believe that YouTube
indeed has a Quality of Service algorithm that lowers the bitrate
when it detects lower speed connections, thus, as you said, the
resolution of the video is lowered. Add with this, some caching
taking place at your ISP, which is probable, you've got a more
stable connection through YT. Part of the reason why it is very hard
for other video delivery services to compete on quality with YT.
Kindest regards,

Olivier
DC and LA where internet speeds are fast! Last night we
attempted to participate in a virtual ritual for Dia de Los

to maintain the connection. Luckily, the event was
simultaneously streamed to Youtube which we were able to
watch just fine, albeit at a lower resolution than normal.
I’ve heard a rumor that the meeting staff didn’t find much
difference between the Zoom bandwidth consumption and the
Youtube consumption but I’m here to tell you definitively,
the difference can be staggering. It’s possible that video
use on the plenaries are sharply limited so as to minimize
bandwidth usage but that’s NOT the direction we want our
meetings to go. We want MORE video participation in our
virtual meetings, not less.
