AFAICT, "/" and "\" are interchangeable.  Of the examples above, the 
ones with a final "." work, but the ones with a trailing "/" or "\" do 
not work.  Also, multiple consecutive "/" and or "\" work if followed by 
a ".".  For example, this works:

"FOO\\\\\\.///.///.\\\\\\///."
