Many thanks Christian, Kurt, and others for your thoughts here.

I will be attending the IGF and am also working with the IGF Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG). Kurt, Mark, & I had a discussion on some potential approaches to the workshop proposal yesterday. I also know Jim well, and can work with Kurt & Jim to help shape this submission.

Furthering Kurt's suggestion of primary message, the group should decide on what we aim to achieve with this workshop, the desired outcome, and our targeted audience. Given the usual distribution of IGF attendees, it seems that we may want to aim for general education and creating awareness of the issues.

Regarding the comment below on targeting the government community - we may want to think carefully about what message the group would want to target to national governments globally and any expected outcome.

The IGF is encouraging formats<http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/workshop-proposals/session-format-outline-2015> other than panels this year. Does anyone have input on an appropriate format? Perhaps a roundtable or a combination of panel & BOF if appropriate panelists can be invited to attend?

Best regards,
Carolyn

Thanks Christian, for getting this started.

I have shared the IGF workshop plan with the people who assembled the Universal Acceptance Repository and also DNA Marketing Committee membesr that are also members of the ICANN UASG. I've also spoken with Jim Prendergast who attends all nearly IGF who will consult with us on how to make an appropriate submission.

I will probably not be the one presenting in Brazil but would be please to coordinate the writing of the submission.

I think we should determine our primary messages first and then choose the best candidates to present them.

Regards,

Kurt

I suspect there will be time to pull together a good deck before IGF. Could somebody who plans to be at IGF and also wants to work on marketing and outreach volunteer to make a submission to IGF?

Agree this is OK. Since there will be members of the UASG attending the IGF, there will be no need
for special funding (other than some materials for distribution). Of course, this is not the type of event
that will scale outreach efforts to the parties we need to reach. It's pretty much the same attendance
that goes to ICANN, perhaps with greater civil society participation, not the software/developers industry?

Subject: [UA-discuss] IGF Workshop Proposal: Universal Acceptance

Dear UA Steering Group Team:

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is soliciting Workshop Proposals for its November 2015 meeting in Brazil.

I recommend that the ICANN UASG and the DNA jointly propose a workshop on Universal Acceptance.

This seems like a good audience to promote UA awareness. Last year's IGF had about 2400 onsite participants, including about 25% from governments & IGOs, 25% private sector, and 110 participants from media. I understand that the private sector representatives includes many Fortune 500 companies. There is little overlap with the ICANN crowd.

The responsibilities are to write the proposal according to the IGF-furnished outline (including identification of speakers), get the speakers to the meeting, and report on the proceedings. There is no fee for sponsorship. I read the proposal requirements and evaluation criteria - I and members of the DNA Tech and Marketing Committees (along with any UASG members who volunteer) can write the proposal, which is due at the end of March. The UASG and DNA can easily bring excellent speakers to the panel.

Proposals must support the IGF themes each year. About 1 in 3 proposals get accepted but I think UA falls under a number of the themes for this IGF, they are:

-      Cybersecurity and Trust;
-      Internet Economy;
-      Inclusiveness and Diversity;
-      Openness;
-      Enhancing Multistakeholder Cooperation;
-      Internet and Human Rights;
-      Critical Internet Resources;
-      Emerging Issues.

Please share your thoughts. If you agree with this proposal, you might write how we should organize this effort. Also state if you wish to volunteer to help draft a proposal. If we do make a proposal, the types of expertise required for the speaking panel will be identified and UASG members can volunteer for that at that time.

More information can be found at: http://www.intgovforum.org/cms/ (second item on the page).

Thanks & Regards,

Kurt
