<p>The nature of this conference and its attendees means we might
focus differently that we would for a more general audience.
People at IUC are well aware that top-level domains and email
addresses can be non-ASCII. They include some of the developers of
the low-level APIs that we are finding support Universal
Acceptance already. Some can probably read raw Punycode. We don't
need to persuade them that UA is a good thing.</p>
<p>I think the most interesting story we have to tell is <b>the
experiences of people who are actively running</b> email
services with address internationalisation, and who are running
domains with non-ASCII names (top-level or lower-level). So, case
studies like Data Xgen Technologies work with email to .भारत
(.bharat) , as described in the UASG013D-161222-EN case study,
would be excellent. From his postings to this list, I think Dr.
Ajay Data would be a very informative speaker for the IUC
audience, if he were willing to make the trip to California.</p>
<p>Are there other good case studies to share? André Schappo using
his 小山@电邮.在线 address? Someone operating a website in the gTLD .РУС
(.rus), as another data point beyond Dr. Ajay Data's ПОЧТА.РУС?<br>
</p>
<p>The second most interesting story we have to tell is <b>our
evaluation of UA compliance</b>. What are our criteria for
compliance? What have we found out about the compliance by
low-level APIs, libraries, and frameworks? What have we found out
about compliance by the user-level apps built on these APIs? It's
the same approach taken by the <i>Criteria for evaluating
programming languages and frameworks with regard to their UA
compliance</i> paper we were working on in December. For this
audience, it would benefit from being developed a bit further. I
feel like this is a topic I could present well, with help from the
group. Several others could also do a good job, I have no doubt.<br>
</p>
<p>Talking about the UASG itself is sadly not all that interesting a
topic. The UASG should get mentioned in passing towards the end of
a presentation about case studies or about UA compliance. It
shouldn't be the main topic of a proposal.<br>
</p>
<p>The IUC usually has only a few hundred attendees, so it's a very
good venue for meeting people between sessions. It attracts people
doing the work of implementing core technologies, so come if you
want access to such people. <br>
</p>
<p>The IUC is unfortunately not all that generous to its presenters.
Presenters have to pay for their own travel, and 50% of their own
registration. For each talk, the IUC discounts one registration by
50%, and offers two nights of free hotel stay. If there are
multiple presenters for a talk, they have to find a way to share
this benefit between them. And, the conference is in the USA,
which is getting to be a more and more difficult country to visit.<br>
</p>
<p>It would be good at this stage not just to draw up some
proposals, but also get commitments from people to make the trip
and be presenters, if the proposals are accepted. <br>
</p>
<p>I must confess, part of my motivation is to come up with a
proposal good enough to get accepted — and so secure me the
registration and hotel benefit. I work for myself, and my boss
would rather not pay full registration. ;-) If others in UASG
want to be presenters for these proposals, then I need to find
another proposal for myself.</p>
