At the hearing this morning, Strickling said the NTIA has received an update from the chairs of both working groups over how long they think it will take to complete the process and so how long the NTIA needs to extend the current IANA contract.

I've not seen an such update. Did I miss it? In which case can someone point me to it and/or provide the email heading on which it was attached?

This hearing is taking place at 10 am EDT tomorrow.  So far, the only witnesses listed are Larry Strickling and Fadi Chehade.
