If I understand correctly, it seems to me the real question is whether the two people share a role (co-) vs. a hierarchy (vice/alt). I don't have a very strong opinion, but given time constraints I lean towards the vice/alt side of things as it seems a bit simpler/less likely to risk deadlock to me. I don't care what the second position is called.
