It is highly disappointing to watch ICANN further depredating the public trust, as we face the latest in a long series of cynical money grabs by cronies of the Corporation's leadership. Serving as a captured agency to Verisign's exploitation of their de facto monopoly over the most valuable domain names is not what any of us had in mind in 1998 — or perhaps it was precisely what you had in mind all the time, and the rest of us were too naïve to see it then. More and more, it looks like a real alternative to current governance is the only path forward that can be expected to work to the benefit of internet users, rather than that of a well-connected company with a documented history of abusing both the market and the privacy of millions of individuals.
