Allowing these price increases will push more and more smaller and personal
sites away. While theoretically price increases should make squatters think
twice about holding a large portfolio, the history of these individuals and
businesses show they are willing to take long term losses for the potential
of a extortion level payoff from a startup or corporation (just look at the
proportion of unused domains registered in the 90s and 00s that can easily
sell for lower prices but are simply retained as part of a portfolio in
case a 6 figure deal comes along). Yes there are other TLDs but people
inherently trust and rely on the recognition of .COM to drive traffic.
Compromising a free and open internet in service of increasing Versign's
bottom line runs counter to ICANN's purpose.
