This will very likely make no difference at all, but what is going on
here? Why such a huge price increase? How is this justified?

Surely those who matter are the individuals buying the domains in the
first place. Running a website often has lots of different costs
involved - from hosting fees to the time to setup and then manage  and
maintain a website. The last thing we need is a huge price increase.

I am a PhD Student Researcher. I don't have the money to pay huge fees
for a domain name. Many people will often choose a .com domain to host
their website because it's the most well known. Far from it's original
purpose: .com domains are used by everyone from companies to individuals.

What is going on today? First .org, and now .com? Has the world gone mad?
