The Domain name system is one of the most vulnerable parts of the internet to oligarchic takeover and step like this one are how they intend to implement it. Despite it's prominence the dns system is actually entirely optional & should be replaced with a more honest alternative. Actions like this and those taken last year with the .org domain represent an assault on the freedom of the people of the world and will give other organisations the political imperative to abandon the dns system altogether, it’s in ICANN and Verisign’s interests to refrain from continuing down this foolish road towards complete irrelevance.
