.org is home of schools, nonprofits, charities, hospitals, and in general (but not exclusively), groups with more noble primary goals than making as much money as possible.  Unduly raising the rent on .org domains would hamper the people with acting from the conviction that money isn't the most important thing in the world.  I would asume ICANN itself registered a .org in order to place itself on one side of this particular fence.  It looks to me like making large sums of money at the expense of others eventually turns in to an exercise in shooting oneself in the foot.  Make the choice for yourself.
