[Comments-org-renewal-18mar19] Comment on Proposed Price Cap Elimination

I'm a free-market guy. But since ICANN has a monopoly on assigning
registrar authority for top-level domains and PIR has a monopoly on .org
domains, we're not talking about a free market here.

To the extent that these monopolies operate at least theoretically in the
"public interest" -- it's even in PIR's name! -- a major justification for
ICANN's regulatory function, and for PIR's status as a "non-profit" is
protecting the consumer from willy-nilly price increases.

ICANN should either keep the price increase cap on .org domains or
"de-monopolize" the .org domain by allowing new entrants to compete with
PIR (using the same central registry mechanism) so that PIR loses if it
jacks up prices enough to make those new entrants viable.
