Having read the report, I have qualms with two of the findings. Finding 6 states that “the SSAC is well prepared to deal with emerging security threats”. However, the report goes on to state in Finding 7 that “the largest impediment to SSAC’s success is the fact that organization is volunteer-based, yet has a large amount of work to do.SSAC volunteers express they have been subject to an increasing requests, both in number and in scope.”
Although the technical expertise possessed by members within SSAC is not in question, how then can SSAC effectively meet emerging security threats while at the same time their hands are tied by the processes and increasing number and scope of requests from the ICANN community? The report doesn’t fully address this concern.

On a different note, recommendation 14 regarding SSAC awareness of ongoing policymaking that is within other SOs/ACs can be strengthened, by exploring the creation of cross SO/AC work parties if a convergence of topics that touch on the security and integrity of unique identifiers also exist among other SOs/ACs. Such topic specific and time bound work parties could resolve some of the reasons survey respondents gave on page 47 of the report of being dissatisfied with their interactions with the SSAC.

Respectfully,

Paul Muchene
