Hi Rod,

absolutely correct, however:

  - use of whois has evolved beyond the original reasons for its existance

- the scope of the use of the internet has greatly expanded

- the current implementation of whois conflicts with legal rights of 
registrants and legal obligations of service providers.

Therefore, whois cannot continue as is. It needs substantial reform, 
which I believe is possible as it is possible to fulfil most of the 
purposes for whois in other ways. Some of these changes may be painful, 
but such is life.
