Dear Chuck et all, 

 

my previous message to the list was obviously not very clear. After
postponing the leadership programme I picked up Marilyn’s proposal to
allocate more time for discussion in Toronto. The two separate sessions
where offered by staff, according to the availability of rooms and to find a
time with minimum conflicting events.

 

While I have not worked on the agenda for the meeting or a proposal for a
work plan, it was never my intention to propose having two identical
meetings. I think it is critical to move forward at every time we can spend
on this project.

 

Heidi is currently checking if we can have one single session instead of two
separate sessions. I am aware that both models will not fit for everybody in
this group, but personally I prefer also the single meeting and not to
interrupt the discussion. 

 

However, for both cases we have to set up a strong agenda and stick to it,
allowing participants to contribute according to their schedule.

 

My idea is to divide the agenda in 3 main parts (proposal): 

1.       drafting team meeting (to be settled)

2.       discussion with staff (about responsibilities and implementation) 

3.       evaluation of results by the WG

 

This proposal is build on the fact, that we must continue the discussion
until Toronto on this mailing list and build consensus  at least on some
basics questions (i.e. target group, format, duration).

 

PLEASE NOTE: These are my ideas only and we should await the final setting
of meetings before we set up the agenda.

Sandra,

 

Was it intended that the two meetings be duplicates or two separate
meetings?  If the former, then I am not sure that 3 hours would be needed.
But I get the impression from your message that the two meetings were
intended to be separate meetings.  If that is the case, more time may be
needed but I would hope that a max of 2 hours would suffice, in  which case,
a meeting from 7 to 9 might work and minimize conflicts.

Dear all,

 

it is great to see so many responses already. The additional meeting
(7:30-9:00) was scheduled that way avoiding time conflicts and allowing most
of the WG members to participate. The second meeting (11.00 – 12:00) was
scheduled weeks ago. 

 

Whilst I agree that in one working session (3 or more hours) the discussion
can be mostly effective, I see the difficulties to accommodate such a
session during the ICANN meeting. Having it before or after the ICANN
meeting was not possible because of budgeting reasons (additional costs for
room, accommodation, travel). 

 

However I will ask Heidi to check, whether it is an possible to reschedule
the second meeting earlier, so that we can continue from 7:30 – 10:30 (or
7:00 -10:00). Nevertheless, some of us will not be able to attend an 3 hours
meeting, due to other obligations, so we have to rely somehow on the
transcripts.

 

I’ll keep you update. It was not the idea to have two identical information
sessions, but lets discuss the agenda after the final confirmation from
Heidi.

I also wholeheartedly agree with the croissants and juice/tea/coffee. If
this is indeed a priority for each of us, then we will make time but within
limits as there other competing priorities as well.

I totally agree with Marilyin, different sessions will bring different
messages and conclusions. We need to focus on one meeting very organized  to
allow views to converge.  I agree with 7 AM or 7:30 AM.

Small juice and croissants as Marilyn has suggested will do great.

Thanks for this proposal.  In my view, there must be a single meeting in
Toronto. The rest of the community has major work items

beyond the Academy idea/concept/proposal. We have to have a single
discussion.  Holding this from 7:30-9:00 a.m. is an excellent idea.

All of us will do our best to show up on time. 

 

Personally, I start many BC meetings at 7 a.m., so that I can conclude them
PRIOR to the agenda of other meetings. I am willing to meet at 7 am. 

for this meeting/discussion in order to have a single, and focused
discussion. It is important that staff and staff consultants are not put in 

the position of hearing different messages. This meeting needs to be about
the community communicating with itself and not creating 

yet another setting where we are not talking to and with each other, but
reading transcripts, and wondering what happens next.  If you hold

two meetings, you will continue to divide the community and avoid the basic
dialogue that is needed among the community members

who have questions, or concerns, or different ideas. It is essential that we
area ll in one room, at one time. That was what led us to 

this space -- let's not miss this opportunity for a single dialogue
opportunity.  

 

Please, consolidate these sessions into one single and early session on
Wednesday.  

 

For me, I will have many other responsibilities for my constituency,
including focus on SSR; and many other topics. I will not be alone in that
challenge.

 

 

The Academy is an interesting concept that the community, broadly, is trying
to assess. 

It is limited in its contribution to the larger issues that the community is
raising. I am committed to a true assessment of how/whether

it can evolve  to serve the community.  

 

Those of us who are committed to this discussion will show up at 7 a.m.. We
do it all the time in our daily work lives. 

Serve croissants with the coffee and juice, and we can handle the complaints
about breakfast. :-)
