[ICANN Academy WG] ICANN Academy WG meetings in Toronto rescheduled

I think a call or two before Toronto would be a good idea. It would help us get moving on identifying target audiences and learning goals and make our meeting in Toronto more effective.

Dear Alain,

yes the agenda is ambitious but not carved in stone, let me put it that way, the agenda is for Toronto and beyond. However a meeting with staff seams important for me under any circumstances. Early collaboration avoids future conflicts and misunderstanding. The ALAC proposal is based on the enormous support we received from staff side.

You are describing a very detailed course of action and I like to learn more about it. Generally I see there is consensus to discuss point 1 (target group) and 2 (learning goals) of the agenda and start the planning from there.

I am asking myself and this group again if we should not have a WG call prior to Toronto?

Best Sandra

Dear Sandra,

I can generally agree to the agenda in principle, although it is an ambitious agenda for a single meeting - even a 3 hours one... and I have also noted all the rich comments.

My experience is that it is unwise to agree on learning goals without having first surveyed the learning needs of the targeted audience (s).

If you teach a "degreeable" course, then all "students" must meet a minimal learning standard and acquire a minimal body of knowledge... with a very varied and disparate targeted audience (s) as we have at ICANN with both current and incoming leaders, and other future leaders, establishing the learning needs becomes the first priority.

May I suggest then that we establish the core knowledge body that all that leaders must ideally have - so that would be covered by all modules of the Academy (so that needs defining of course) - then the survey of learning needs, as measured against the core knowledge body, establishes which and how many modules a given "learner" must take.

The first priority may be to bring current leaders to a minimal common level of knowledge. With time, incoming leaders will be better and better prepared.

Dear all,

I received the information that the Academy WG is now scheduled for: Wednesday, 17 October 7-10 a.m. Although not all of us will make it to attend a 3 hours meeting, I hope to meet many of you at least partly.

>From the recent exchange on this mailing list I draw the conclusion that generally the support and the need for a leadership training programme is given SOAC wide. If we can agree furthermore, that the long term goal of this WG is, to work on a modular inclusive capacity building system, which allows us to implement new modules in the future and modify existing modules, I would now focus on a leadership pilot project for Beijing. I am referring here again to the modular pyramid (enclosed), which is not written in stone but should serve as a template for our work.

That means for our agenda in Toronto we have to:

1. specify the target group (incoming and / or current leaders)

2. agree on the learning goal

3. discuss the methodology (online / F2F / proposed resource person)

4. agree on the dates and the duration of this pilot programme

5. discuss and agree with ICANN staff how to implement this project

As for the curriculum, I propose to set up a drafting team in Toronto which will work on the curriculum afterwards and present it to the wider WG later this year.

Please let me know if you can generally agree to the proposed course of action and post your comments and changes here on this list.

Looking forward to it!

Best Sandra
