Glenn, such an important example of how some of us work "around the world", even if we are from one region.

thanks for sharing this.

Hi All
Its more than geographic representation its also the life experiences of members of the committee who have worked in Inter-cultural experiences, training programmes, international projects etc that can provide relevant experience.

One example is my work with a special committee with IEEE. This committee partnered with the UN Foundation and we had equal number of professional non profits (humanitarian organizations) and the typical electrical engineers. We were charged to produce a prototype of a 1 KW system to provide basic power to isolated and off the grid communities. Despite the best intentions the humanitarians were weeded out and only the professional technicians remained. We were looking at power solutions for the Hopi in SW New Mexico. They were suggesting wind solutions for the local Mesas. The problem was a lack of cultural awareness of the Hopi world view of not capturing the wind. Not only did these folks couldn't fathom this possibility they mocked the suggestion that it would be rejected. This was after three days of education of learning about the 'other' perspective.

I strongly agree with the voices for a more diverse participation.

With a 5 members limitation is highly desirable to have at least one from each geographic region so having 2 members from Africa does not make any sense.

Dear Marilyn and all, we where listening to your concerns about the limitation of 5 for the WT, but after re-considering pro and cons and taking into account the replies on this mailing list and the call, we will go ahead with the 5 assigned Work Team Members (WTM). It is a pilot and we will learn from it.

We will not only learn from the results the assigned 5 WTM will deliver, but this course - more than any other - will get its benefit from the actual participants. And here we have such great diversity in all respects: https://community.icann.org/display/LTP/2017+Registered+Participants

Luckily the number of around 40 registrations does not exceed the resources available and everyone who did register can participate.

I will connect the WTMs with Incite Learning in a next step so that they can start their work.

Best Sandra

Sandra.

I regret that circumstances prevented my joining the call, however, I have raised my concerns about the approach of limiting to only five. I seriously doubt that my concerns would have been listened to, as I have stated them now more than once, and so, I will restate this again.

It is important to consider that by excluding different representatives that have indicated their strong interest in contributing, the 'project' also excludes the possible champions of the project.

We have to understand that ICANN's budget is finite and that having champions is important, for any new initiative.

I think that five is much too small for several reasons, and yes, I disagree with the ICANN retained consultant. I have a lot of experience as well in doing organizational development, and frankly, most small groups spend their time, defending why they are so "small".

I did fill in the self nomination to be an individual participant.

However, I continue to strongly recommend that this limitation of 5 needs to be changed and that more inclusion be established, before moving forward.

Marilyn Cade

Dear ICANN Academicer (this word exits indeed in German and I am sure you will understand:))

Thanks to all who expressed interest to help shaping the new Intercultural Awareness Programme. (see full list of application we received until 31 August here: https://community.icann.org/display/LTP/Work+Team+Members%3A+applications+received )

Members of the ICANN Academy WG just finished the above mentioned Single Purpose Call to identify 5 members for the Work Team. Members present on the call agreed on the following selection criteria’s and propose the following names for the Work Team:

Criteria’s:

1. Geographical and cultural diversity

2. Gender balance

3. Stakeholder balance

4. New comer and experienced members of the community

5. Should have participated in the Leadership Programme

Please note: if you have not been selected to this Work Team this does not mean that you cannot contribute to this new programme. There is still one more day to register as an ordinary participant<https://www.formpl.us/form/6133876508327936> and the evolvement of this course will be based on the feedback and input we gather from the first group. You can visit the list of registrations we received so far here: https://community.icann.org/display/LTP/2017+Registered+Participants

Also these criteria’s and the composition of the group are not carved in stone for the future, but will help us to move forward with this pilot quickly.

Please let me know until Monday 18 September if you have strong objection to this proposal otherwise this group will start working with Incite Learning.

Best Sandra
