[icannlabs] i liked the emerging theme i heard on the webinar today -- a shift away from "build new"

Chris

Hashtag "nazis" drive me mad - so using any form of taxonomy has to allow for the kind of flexibility you mentioned.

As for channels etc., I'd be more concerned initially with getting people involved at a very basic level eg. submitting comments on open discussions etc.,
SGs etc., can be quite daunting and if you haven't had a chance to see what's going on in general you could get a very odd impression of things (though that probably varies a lot depending on where you "fit").

Regards

Michele

I'm always in favor of reusing existing data, information, or systems as it's increases the value of what's already present and familiar and shortens the time to value of the new work.

As to the hashtag idea, I like it. I do want to point out an observation: tags are informal taxonomies (and a hashtag is a social and shared form of tagging). The beauty of tags (and hashtags) is that they are bottoms-up, but also constantly evolving as new data and people enter the system. The reason I mention this that any system that tries to impose order on tagging and hashtags must be equally dynamic or it risks being made irrelevant. Something to bear in mind as we continue to look at this.

As for the image and and pairing of old-timer -- although I prefer the term 'veteran' :) -- with newcomer, this reminds me of an important question which may warrant it's own threaded discussion. At the Beijing meeting Marilyn Cade and I discussed engagement in general and we touched lightly on digital engagement. During our talk, she made the very valid point that as we engage with people that we needed to funnel them into the structures and constituencies where they would have a voice and could find people with liked-minded interests and concerns. And that if we left people floating in the general ICANN ether they could get lost.

I personally think she's right and I would like to discuss how we connect the Digital Engagement Project into activities or engagement funnels that the SO/ACs or constituencies have.

Any thoughts?

(And if someone wants to branch this into a new thread, please do so.)

I like and Support the development of beautiful simple idea.

Perhaps this can be a candidate for the second project within the communication track.
A editorially guided and managed repository of hash tags for ICANN.

Not unlike the Acronym helper!

I also find the parallel and differences between creation and use of hashtags and domain names in a (practical sense and not a technical one) interesting.

hi all,

so an idea came to me as i was listening to the webinar today. it has long seemed to me that many of the ideas of digital engagement could be tested by introducing new ways of using existing tools. ask anyone who has worked with me on a startup -- my favorite phrase is "cheap is good."

so here's my idea of the day. what if we came up with a list of tags that people used to self-identify themselves in social media profiles. that would make it easier for people to find each other, without having to build massive parallel infrastructure.

what follows is a first-try list of tags. the first clump is based on that drawing i flashed up on our last call and is trying to get at "career stages" or some such. probably needs a bit of refining. but the notion is that the top of the list is where we all started as we entered ICANN, the middle is kindof the peak and the bottom is the list of things us old geezers might be doing to help the next generation along. the rest of the clumps are pretty self explanatory.

#ICANN-ALAC

i've crammed three of these tags into my Twitter profile (OConnorStP) and will see how well search picks them up in a day or so. oh, and here's the picture that puts the old-timer/newbie pairings together.
