CONGRATULATIONS TO 2019 ETHOS AWARD RECIPIENT
Kurt Pritz Honored for Contribution to Multistakeholder Governance

The 2019 Multistakeholder Ethos Award was awarded to Kurt Pritz in
recognition of his many years of service to the ICANN community.

At a ceremony Monday night at ICANN65, community members, Javier Rúa-Jovet
(At-Large), Olga Cavalli (GAC), and Stephen Deerhake (ccNSO) presented the
award on behalf of the selection panel made up of representatives from
ICANN's community structures. They congratulated Pritz for being able to
achieve consensus among groups with disparate views and priorities. The
selection panel highlighted the extraordinary amount of time Pritz
dedicated to one of the most significant issues in the ICANN community:
WHOIS. Pritz recently chaired the Expedited Policy Development Process
(EPDP) on Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data.

The Multistakeholder Ethos Award honors members of the ICANN community who
have made outstanding contributions to ICANN's multistakeholder model of
Internet governance, demonstrating the spirit of collaboration, and
strongly promoting consensus.

ICANN Board Chair Cherine Chalaby and President and CEO Göran Marby spoke
about consensus as the foundation on which the multistakeholder model is
built.

Pritz is a former ICANN org employee, serving in a number of senior roles
between 2003 and 2012. He is currently a management consultant. In addition
to his recent EPDP role, Pritz has also participated in other ICANN working
groups and policy development processes such as the New gTLD Subsequent
Procedures Policy Development Process.

This session will explore technologies that may affect the unique
identifier ecosystem that ICANN helps coordinate. Discussions will be
centered around the policy aspects of DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS
(DoT). While major browsers are getting ready to have DoH turned on by
default, there are still operational and privacy issues being discussed.

* ICANN President & CEO and ICANN Board Chair Meet with Moroccan Students *
On the first day of ICANN65, ICANN President and CEO Göran Marby and Board
Chair Cherine Chalaby met with 32 college students from the Institut
National des Postes et Télécommunications (INPT) from Rabat, the Moroccan
capital city. The students asked questions about ICANN's role and the
importance of participation within the multistakeholder model. Organized by
the African Regional At-Large Organization (AFRALO) leaders, the meeting
gave the students the opportunity to have an informal conversation with
Marby and Chalaby.

*Ten Things You Didn't Know About Morocco*
By Rachel McFadyen

One of the unique aspects of the ICANN community is its truly global nature
and the opportunity to meet and work with people from across the world.
We're getting that chance again here in Morocco - a country with a rich
history, diverse culture, and a growing Internet community.

*New ICANN Partnership in India*

Last week, ICANN org and India's National Association of Software and
Services Companies (NASSCOM) announced they have established a new
partnership center in India.
The Internet Identifier Innovation Center is ICANN's first partnership
center to focus on technical research. The joint effort on research will
foster innovation and reinforce ICANN's commitment to preserving and
enhancing a stable, secure, and unified global Internet.
David Conrad, ICANN's Chief Technology Officer, said one early benefit of
the collaboration is new work on the Domain Name System (DNS) and Internet
Protocol version 6 (IPv6) in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT).
He highlighted the partnership center's first research project on testing
the use of the DNS to facilitate updating IoT device firmware. The
forthcoming results may contribute to work being done in the Internet
Engineering Task Force (IETF) aimed at establishing global standards for
IoT devices in IPv6 environments. The project team is comprised of ICANN
technical experts, NASSCOM's Centre of Excellence for Internet of Things
team, researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad,
and participants from India's Education and Research Network (ERNET).
Today, most IoT devices are shipped with factory-installed firmware that is
seldom, if ever, updated. Given the increasing exploitation of
vulnerabilities in out-of-date IoT firmware, solutions that allow for
automatic updating of IoT devices' firmware, even if the company that sold
the devices no longer exists, would be beneficial to the stability and
security of the Internet. *Nearly half of all IPv6 users in the world are
in India

where an estimated 270 million users have IPv6 connectivity to the
Internet. If an assumption is made that IPv6 will be used for IoT devices
in the future, India's network environment provides a robust ecosystem to
test out new IoT-related technologies.
Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM said, "This is the first collaboration of
its kind, and with our combined resources we hope to witness significant
innovation and development in the DNS and Internet space to support
billions of IoT devices in the coming years."
In addition to the technical activities, the Internet Identifier Innovation
Center will also facilitate outreach to boost the Indian community's
participation in ICANN policymaking processes and the Internet's
multistakeholder governance model. To reach more stakeholders around the
world, ICANN org has established partnership centers in Egypt, Korea, and
Paraguay.
