NONPROFIT GROUP Public Interest Registry (PIR) is set to publicly
launch on Thursday a new top-level Internet domain designed
exclusively for genuine non-government organization (NGOs).

"For the first time all sectors of civil society - humanitarians,
environmentalists, human rights groups and charities of all kinds
will have their own home on the Internet, with an enhanced ability
to become more visible within a trusted community," the PIR said in
a released statement on Wednesday.

The new domain known as .NGO/.ONG, (.ONG for Spanish, French and
other romance languages), which was developed by the PIR in close
consultation with a broad and international range of NGOs, was
designed to create a unique international online community for civil
society.

The PIR said that applicants will be required to demonstrate that
they are genuine NGOs to ensure the vital trusting nature of the
community.

"Having done this, domain holders will have their organization
included in a searchable NGO Directory that includes a customizable
online profile, enabling each NGO to showcase its activities and
communicate with partners, funders and the public," the PIR also
said.

The unique directory page also includes a "donate here" button to
help donors contribute directly to the organization of their
choice. The public launch event is set at the E-Library, AIM
Conference Center Manila at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted by Nick
Thorne CMG, former UK Ambassador to the UN in Geneva and a global
authority on Internet governance.
