I was lucky enough to be on a cruise around the Caribbean late last year.
One of the places I called at was Bonaire, pronounced, roughly "bonn-ahree which means "flat island". We had a trip to the other side of the island, away from Kralendijk (sp?) and our guide told us a little of the history of the island including the fact that comparatively recently it had become independent from the Netherlands.
That would seem to counter the proposed name on both counts :)
