For example, here's what I get in Ubuntu 13.10's port of the tz database: $ date -u; TZ=Asia/Calcutta date Thu Jan 16 16:01:49 UTC 2014 Thu Jan 16 21:31:49 IST 2014 It's an alias for Asia/Kolkata, and it still works.
