Actually, no they aren't. I've spent the last several years programming on
a processor where a byte is 16 bits - that is, the C type "unsigned char"
can hold values from 0 to 65535 inclusive.
Incidentally, that's something like the third commonest processor in the
world. I suspect most of you have owned one at one time or another.
