(For what it's worth, GNU tar's pipe-to-(de)compression-utility
functionality supports auto-detection of various other compression
formats [incluing lzip], as described here:

"tar --help" lists the compression formats compiled into that particular
GNU tar binary [in the "Compression options:" section].)
