Hi Don,

 

The energy and spark you bring will be sorely missed.

Without you we would not have seen the UASG raise the level of awareness to where it is now and most importantly making it sustainable by having it being assumed into the ICANN strategic plan.  But I can only believe that we have not seen the last of you in the ICANN sphere.  At least I would expect you to continue to ensure that your email address ( <mailto:kōrero at ngāpukapuka.nz> kōrero at ngāpukapuka.nz) can be used properly by all systems! ;-)

Don,

 

Ram has said it very well.  You have been a mainstay for an important effort, the need for and importance of universal acceptance, that is now being recognized as an essential element in the propagation of the Internet to the entire world.  You have been persistent in your efforts, and your effort has led to the progress that we are observing now.  Congratulations for a job well done!

 

I hope that your retirement will not mark the end of your involvement in UA or in support of the sperad and usefulness of the Internet for all of us on the planet.

Don,

When I founded the Universal Acceptance Steering Group, along with several other community members, the single most momentous decision Cyrus & I made was to ask you to help us by becoming the Secretary General of the UASG.

 

In short order, volunteer led actions that had not made it into execution moved at record speed. Order, schedules and roadmaps became the norm. All of us volunteers and subject matter experts were able to focus on the significant issues ahead of us, rather than the administrative ones.

 

Of all the people involved in the UASG, I have perhaps been the largest beneficiary of your excellence, your dedication, your sense of humor, your focus, and most importantly, your friendship. Along the way, you have ensured that the UASG remains a community-led initiative that has both achieved real results, emerging as an exemplar of how substantial and good things can happen in ICANN-land.

 

You will always be a pioneering leader in Universal Acceptance.

A short note to say that after more than four years of active and direct involvement with the Universal Acceptance Steering Group I am stepping down as the Secretary General at the end of the month.

 

I have been keen to do this for quite some time and the group now has a very detailed (nearly 100) set of actions for the next year and the newly elected leadership are well established.

 

The administration of the program will be supported going forward by ICANN’s Sarmad Hussain who has been closely involved since the ICANN Board included Universal Acceptance as one of its five strategic objectives last year.

 

So many people who have been along for the ride for so long to thank.  

 

The UASG will issue a formal announcement in due course and ICANN will issue a blog in the next couple of months about their vision of Universal Acceptance.
