Hello!
I agree with Seun.  Having a mentor in a certain event or space would entice a lot of individuals.  Based on experience, mentors guided me in getting into the flow of things as I am for one was quite hesitant in participating at first.  Am I right, Maureen?  :-)

Yours truly,Aris Ignacio

Hi,

Speaking about mentors/guides, this is usually practised for the ICANN fellows and i think it has been quite useful. Applying this to ALSes however would mean that the particular ALS already has plan to attend a particular ICANN meeting (with source of funding) and then arrangements for mentors/guide can be done pre-meeting. Overall i think its a good thing to have mentors walking one through the ICANN environ but we just need to determine how effective this can be applied in a free setup like Atlarge where most have diverse plans for the week (not like ICANN fellowship that is program specific)

That said, i think another capacity building effort could be to intentionally contact Janice and say "hey let us know if you need mentors for folks interested in AtLarge" Or sending similar broadcast message to ALSes. It can also be a remote based activity and not necessarily requiring physical ICANN meeting.

Regards

I agree Mwendwa. There is a lot to be said for ALSes being guided by assigned mentors at ICANN meetings – and basically following them around and being introduced to people and getting them up to speed with what the working groups and RALO meetings are about so that they can participate because they are more comfortable with the people they are amongst and are better informed and supported.  This is inreach/ capacity building – which I see as the same thing. From: alac-sc-outreach-bounces at atlarge-lists.icann.org [mailto:alac-sc-outreach-bounces at atlarge-lists.icann.org] On Behalf Of Mwendwa Kivuva

Subject: Re: [Alac-sc-outreach] Fwd: [lac-discuss-en] REQUEST for TOPICS: Capacity Building Webinar Topics Thanks Dev for the clarification. My idea of "effective communication skills " is adviced by my view that more people from ALSes are not able to participate effectively because they have the perceived view that they cannot express themselves well enough,  and even if they can, they don't have the confidence to do so. My view is from observations and interaction with other participants. Probably if we demystify how easy it is to participate in the difference platforms at our disposal,  we can start to see more people in these spaces.I hope this is clearer. Dear Mwendra,A skills analysis was supposed to be done as one of the ATLAS II recommendations which was tasked to be done by the RALO secretariats. As far as I know, some preliminary surveys were done, but didn't get enough responses because many persons didn't understand the intent of the surveys. The discussion by the RALO secretariats at ICANN53 was that the survey will be done over.Re: your suggestion for a capacity building webinar, can you expand on what you mean by "effective communication skills" ?Kind Regards,Dev Anand On Wed, Aug 12, 2015 at 10:21 AM, Mwendwa Kivuva <Kivuva at transworldafrica.com> wrote:
Hi Dev, Do we have a skills analysis for ALSs or this is what we are trying to address? I can add "effective communication skills" as part of the topics for capacity building Regards
