[Gnso-igo-ingo-crp] [Ext] Letter from Ban Ki-moon to foreign minsters of the United Nations member states

This June 2016 letter from the UN General Secretary is addressed to foreign ministers of UN member states and seeks their assistance in having ICANN grant permanent protections to prevent the names or acronyms of IGOs from being registered at the second level of the DNS.

That matter has been addressed recently in regard to the names, but not the acronyms, of certain IGOs. I hereby request that staff provide a link to the recent GNSO Council resolution on this matter.

The Secretary General’s letter does not directly address the issue that we have been grappling with – assuring IGO access to effective and low-cost curative DRP mechanisms when a name or acronym that is identical or confusingly similar to its own has been registered as a domain and is being used in bad faith. Hence, in my personal opinion, the only relevance of this letter to our work is its emphasis on the important public services provided by IGOs, and I believe that the members of our WG are already well acquainted with and respectful of that valuable role.
