Greg
I guess ICANN Org could figure that out with some research.
The point is to reserve the names in languages relevant to the respective communities.
„official“ just does not do the trick as extensively discussed before.
best
Jorge

Katrina’s suggestion is sensible and relevant to our DNS environment. The suggested list will provide predictability and can be made available to third parties so they are of the protected strings. I also applaud Katrina’s rationale:

“This is a very limited addition, can be clearly defined and identical to the way ICANN processed the Red Cross and IOC names list.”

[NB: The Red Cross and IOC names (including the recognized translations and variants have been placed on a list, which was carefully assembled and vetted by a multistakeholder team with very helpful staff support.]

Jorge,

How would the rationale described above apply to your proposal to afford protection to capital city names in “all relevant national, regional and community languages”? Practically, can it be similarly implemented?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Greg

Dear all
As explained before many countries do not have «official» languages as such. Hence, I would favor –in a spirit of consensus and subject to that spirit being shared by all- a solution that would afford protection to all official and all relevant national, regional and community languages – besides UN languages, for sure...
Kind regards
Jorge

Hear hear!!

I may not be on the call tonight as I have a work dinner appointment, but I entirely support the substance of this recommendation as well.

Dear all,

on behalf of the geoTLD.group I would like to provide our input on topic 4c:

While we are still of the opinion that a name of a capital city shall be protected in any language, we are willing to reconsider our position to achieve consensus and could support the amendment to
1. The official language of the country/territory/capital city.
2. Translations of the country/territory/capital city in UN languages.

with the following addition:
3. Transliterations into ASCII and conversion to DNS labels. Otherwise capital cities such as Den Haag or São Tomé would not be able to be protected with denhaag/den-hag or sao-tome/saotome.

This is a very limited addition, can be clearly defined and identical to the way ICANN processed the Red Cross and IOC names list. I hope this is an acceptable compromise for the working group.

One general remark: We would appreciate if other work track members are willing to accept compromises in other areas, in order to move forward.

Talk to you later.

Dear all,

Please find below the proposed agenda for the Work Track 5 call taking place Wednesday, 12 June 2019 at 20:00 UTC for 90 mins.

1. Welcome/Agenda Review/SOI Updates

2. Reminder of Process (PDF attached)

3. Recommendations Review Status Tracking Document (PDF attached)

4. Summary Document Review (PDF pending):

a. Geographic Terms Requiring Letters of Support/Non-Objection (Recommendations 10, 12, 13)

b. Capital city names, Sub-national place names (county, province, or state, listed in the ISO 3166-2 standard), UNESCO or M49 Area

c. Languages: At our last meeting we reviewed the comments relating to the language requirement for geographic terms: "An application for any string that is a representation, in any language, of the capital city name of any country or territory listed in the ISO 3166-1 standard". There was general acceptance and no objections towards refining the language requirements to reflect more relevance and practical applicability. At this stage, the group considered the following option to be a suitable base for further discussion:

1. The official language of the country/territory/capital city.

2. Translations of the country/territory/capital city in UN languages.
WT5 members are encouraged to consider this and to put forward suggestions via the email list as well as during our next call.

d. Geographic Terms That Require Letters of Support/Non-Objection Dependent Upon Intended Usage (Recommendation 11) (text pending)

3. AOB
