Dear All,

Following the WG meeting yesterday, please find attached the latest version of the statement of purpose. Chuck’s has provided the following instructions in relation to next steps:

I would like to request that everyone comment on the latest redlined edits and the comments/edits from Peter Kimpian by Friday of this week. In particular, review and comment on the redline edits and/or Peter’s comments on the following Items:

·         Goal iv: “To help articulate a rationale for a potential RDS” Peter questions whether this is a real goal.

·         Specific Purpose 1: “A purpose of gTLD registration data is to provide information about the lifecycle of a domain name”.  Peter suggests adding ‘necessary’ before information so it would read ‘. . . provide necessary information . . .’

·         Specific Purpose 2:  “A purpose of RDS is to provide an authoritative source of information about, for example, domain contacts[1], domain names and name servers for gTLDs, [based on approved policy]. ”
o   Note that ‘for example’ was added in our meeting today with no objections from those on the call.
o   Also, note that what was previously shown as Specific Purpose 5 was determined by those on the call today as duplicative of Specific Purpose 2 so 5 was deleted (as shown in the redline version).
o   Peter submitted his comments just before today’s call so his comments were made relative to the previous version; he suggested adding ‘maintain relevant’ to the old Specific Purpose 5; if my understanding is correct, I think that would change the above Specific Purpose 2 to the following: “A purpose of RDS is to maintain an authoritative source of relevant information about, for example, domain contacts[2], domain names and name servers for gTLDs, [based on approved policy]. ”

·         Specific Purpose 3: “A purpose of RDS is to identify domain contacts and facilitate communication with domain contacts associated with generic top-level domain names, [based on approved policy].”  Peter suggested replacing ‘facilitate’ with ‘enable’.

·         Previous Specific Purpose 5: A purpose of RDS is to promote the availability of accurate gTLD registration data.  Peter suggested replacing ‘promote’ with ‘ensure’ as well as adding ’when it is necessary’ at the end.
o   As noted above, Purpose 5 was deleted because it duplicated Purpose 2.
o   We discussed Peter’s suggested changes for this one in our call today and there was no support expressed for including the edits suggested by Peter.

To hopefully make it easy to respond, I suggest that members write any comments, expressions of support or expressions of opposition after the bullet points above.

It would good if we could finalize the Statement of Purpose online this week but, if not, we will revisit it in our first teleconference call after our F2F meeting in Hyderabad.
