Point in fact (at least in US), you don't need registration to operate a
car on your own property. In fact, you don't even need a drivers
license. You DO need it when you drive on public roads, which is
essentially what we are talking about here. Operating a domain is an
inherently public thing. I suppose you could sit on a name and never do
anything with it, but for almost everyone who buys a domain, they intend
for OTHER PEOPLE to communicate with them, and those OTHER PEOPLE should
have SOME WAY to authenticate them.
