Thanks for bringing this forward Marika.  Data science meets the real
world. This kerfuffle is about normalizing choice for a data capture system
fit for a general population. Then there is construction, capture, curation
and reporting.

RDS has a data structure. Any data structure of multiple parts requires
that the key for every part in the structure is labeled at construction; we
must know what we call that bit of value. That there is choice to record
value for a tuple, even if it is a null value, does not relieve the system
of curating and reporting the key.

When there is value recorded, then the choice becomes whether to report
that value. Or, not at all.
