Dear all,

As I sent my email to the lists, I thought it better to do the same with the response. Just so you know.

Best,

Roelof

Hello all,

So to your initial point Roelof, it is a publicly available list and I think there is no expectation of confidentiality in postings so I don't feel there is anything wrong in quoting people so long as it accurately reflects what people said.

That said of course I don't wish in any way to make you uncomfortable and if I had thought it would have I would have course contacted you. So I can only apologize and make it clear that I've heard your point.

Re my involvement in this list and others. It is most certainly not "as a journalist" because there is rarely anything newsworthy. It's as someone that has followed ICANN closely for over a decade and wants too help improve it.

But that said I do intend to occasionally write articles about the process. And I think that's a good thing and is also a help to the process itself.

That said those articles don't tend to quote from the mailing lists but give an overview. In this case, with people complaining about the workload, it made obvious sense to say what people were saying.

To Mathieu's point about participation, I wasn't aware of the graph and would be happy to update the article if you wish.

And in fact my main concern was not this main mailing list but all the sub groups and in particular the other stewardship thread. I have noticed a big drop off in mailing list participants - people actually commenting.

And in conversations with people recently, almost all of them have said they've stopped reading most of the posts; some have just given up on following the process and are waiting for the comment periods.

I've not seen this discussed anywhere so my point in the article was that people are so caught up with the work that they're losing track of what's going on more broadly.

Anyway I hope this explains where I'm coming from.

I do hope you all realize that I have nothing but respect for you and the work you are doing.

Kieren

Thank you Roelof for sending this interesting article and Mathieu for the illustrative graph.
As DK is mentioned in this article, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify a little: We do believe that it is a challenging time line that we are working with, however, we also understand the need to keep momentum in our work – the CWG is dependent on it. Under these circumstances it becomes even more important that documents under discussion are easily available and accessible to all (also to people outside the CCWG). That was what I asked for in my initial comment. Everyone interested should be able to follow our work.

Again, thanks to all involved for the hard work.
Wishing you all a good weekend.

Best regards,
Julia

Dear Colleagues,

Thanks Roelof for drawing our attention to this article.

One sentence drew my attention :

the number of active participants has dropped to dangerously low levels. Levels that no one is monitoring because all those remaining in the process are too overwhelmed with work.
While the sentence is not specifically targetting the CCWG, as you know staff keeps track of participation on a regular basis. With Brenda and Alice's help I can confirm that participation to CCWG calls remains consistently around 50. Below is a quick graph to illustrate this.

Kieren,

I came across your article in The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/04/15/internet_kingmakers_cry_mercy_over_crazed_work_schedule

It surprises me (or maybe it doesn't) that you quote me, without showing the courtesy of at least informing me beforehand.
Additionally, I wonder if you have announced to us all that you are participating in the CCWG as a journalist. I am not aware of that, but might have missed something.
