Domain names are a limited good created on top of a huge heap of public IP
and network effects. ICANN has an effective monopoly over this good, and
their fees are essentially rents (in the classic sense). Clearly, there is
a lot of temptation to raise fees, and I'm sure there's a ton of
rationalizations, but they're all bullshit. The cost of administering the
system is close to $0 at the margin. ICANN is a steward. They should act
like one and avoid the temptation of rationalizing price increases.
