Dear Council,
As the current GNSO Liaison to the GAC I do support the call every 2 years with a 4 year term limit. We do, however, need to figure out what to do about my term as I am sort of caught in a weird place. We have a couple of options.
1. Make my term that starts at the end of the annual meeting a two year term which will then by the end of the two years bring me to the term limit. This would mean the next call for a liaison would be in 2024;
2. Allow me to run next year for the two-year term which would mean technically I could serve for 5 years; or
3. Do the call next year and not allow me to run (which technically means my term limit would be three (3) years.
Personally, I prefer option 1 since option 3 would be unfair to limit me to shorter than 4 years, and option 2 would not make sense giving me a longer term limit.
Just something to think about for the next meeting.

Thanks Anne. We would need to check but I tend to think the SSC Charter itself is independent of this update: the SSC will just be triggered every two years with the gac liaison EoI for them to provide their recommendation. Their mandate remains the same but they'll just be asked to provide their recommendation more frequently for this particular position.

Do Standing Selection Committee guidelines have to be updated accordingly? Charter seems to say that committee acts to recommend the GAC Liaison.

Absent of any concern on this approach by the next council meeting (where we will have an AOB item to wrap this up), we will notify the GAC and update the text of the EoI accordingly.

As requested by Phillippe, I'm replying to this thread to put my proposal during our Council meeting last week into text for our Council members to consider:
I propose we open the call for GNSO liaison to the GAC every 2 years, allowing re-selection/election once with a 4-year hard stop.
I believe aligning the Liaison's term requirements to councilors is reasonable and urge our colleagues to consider accepting this as our future practice.
Like I have clarified during last week's meeting, this is not a request to open the call now, but a proposal for what we do in the future.

If I can make one minor suggestion and that is the annual report. Historically we have done the annual report at the annual meeting to coincide with the re-appointment or new appointment of the GAC Liaison. My suggestion would be that we either continue to do that at the annual meeting or alternatively if for whatever reason you believe it should be prior to the annual meeting, then perhaps September 1st of each year. I can endeavor to get my annual report to the Council at that time this year as that is much closer to what I was expecting.
If, however, you would like to stick with earlier, perhaps in starting next year it becomes due at the ICANN Policy meeting as opposed to a July 1st date.
Other than that, I am good.

Thanks Paul, Manju, Desirée and Jeff for weighing in on the renewal of the GAC position.
With those inputs, leadership would like to suggest we follow what we have for councilors and add a limit of 4 years with a review every year, possibly more thorough than what we have been doing so far. The attached call for candidates is intended to reflect this. An alternative would be to strictly follow a councilor’s mandate and have a 2 year term without review. The former (4 year), however, has our preference.
